The 2013 SPA Triples was hosted by Penicuik on a cold and blustery but mainly dry 1st September. This was the first National Competition to be held in Penicuik and for many players it was their first opportunity to try out Penicuik’s new piste.
With no power available at Penicuik’s piste it was back to an ‘old school’ pen and paper competition – a snake format over six rounds with wins and points difference separating the placings.
The competition remained tight at the top all day. At lunch two teams (Champignons & IPA) had perfect records of three wins, with Maboules, Triaxle & Capercaillie snapping at their heels with two wins.
By the end of round 4 the Champignons were clear leaders on 4 wins +36, but IPA, Maboules and Capercaillie were still in the hunt with 3 wins each.
Round 5 saw IPA beat the Champignons and Maboules clocked up another win, leaving the top three places as follows: Champignons 4 wins +30, IPA 4 wins +23, Maboules 4 wins+19
IPA registered a strong 13-1 win against DRAM in the final round meaning the competition would go to the wire and with Champignons drawn against Maboules the top three places could all change. The Champignons did what they needed to (just) with a 13-7 win and took the title on the narrowest of margins.
