The SPA Singles and Doubles titles were contested over the weekend of 20th and 21st August at Fochabers Petanque Club. Due to the number of entries for the Singles and a lack of suitable space, the Shooting title was not contested.
First up, the Singles on Saturday and 22 entries. The format was a 6 round Swiss and, due to only 8 lanes being available, each round was played in 2 sessions.
The title looked like it would be won by Colin Stewart who had managed to secure a perfect 5 wins going into the last round against Shirley Legge who had 4 wins. At the same time, Lynn Jenkins would play John Wilson, also both on 4 wins. Shirley got the better of Colin and all eyes were then on the match between Lynn and John. In the end, Lynn beat John and pipped Shirley as her points difference was one point greater. Colin had to settle for 3rd.
Sunday brought the doubles and, with 11 teams competing, that meant byes. Lynn and Shirley dominated the day, beating everyone in their path to win the title and complete a perfect weekend for the pair. John Wilson and Robbie Stronach finished 2nd while Mari Snell and Dani Cassini finished 3rd.
Very many thanks to Fochabers for hosting the weekend.
Next up is the Scottish Masters at Troon on 17th and 18th June for the top 12 teams from the Grand Prix Series. This will be used to select Scotland Squads for 2017 internationals.
