Home Nations Report

homenations2013

Inverleith Petanque Club hosted the 2013 Home Nations on 10th and 11th August.  A total of 24 teams from England, Wales and Scotland competed over the weekend for the annual event.  With England bringing one of their strongest ever squads it would be a tough test for the Scottish and Welsh players.

True to form, England hit the front early and after 3 rounds were 8 wins ahead of Scotland and 10 wins ahead of Wales.  By Saturday night that lead had extended to 20 wins.

Overnight Standings on Saturday:  England 38 v Scotland 18 v Wales 16

In reality the question at this stage was not about who would win but by how much.  And there was still a fight to be had for second spot.

Wales seemed to step up the pace in the race for second spot on Sunday morning and pulled level with the Scots’ total by Sunday lunch.

Sunday Lunch standings:  England 56 v Scotland 26 v Wales 26

England continued to forge ahead on Sunday afternoon and kept their best round until the last, a perfect 8 wins.  Wales recorded one of their best rounds in round 10 with 5 wins compared to Scotland’s 2 which all but sealed Scotland’s fate.

Final Standings: England 75 v Wales 35 v Scotland 34

Top Team: England 8 – 12 wins +92

Top Welsh Team: Wales 2 – 7 wins +10

Top Scottish Team: Scotland 2 – 8 wins +40

Congratulations to England for once again retaining the Home Nations.  We look forward to meeting up with everyone again in England in 2014.
