We’d like to remind members that, in order to compete in SPA competitions in 2017, you will need to be in possession of a new SPA licence (the new credit card design) and this must be produced at registration for each competition. It takes around 4 weeks from your application to receive your new licence. With this in mind, we suggest you apply for your licence no later than Sunday 12th March to ensure you have your licence in time.
Licences can only be issued to those who are either members of a SPA affiliated club or who have paid an individual SPA membership fee.
You can apply for your licence by clicking on the link in the ‘quick links’ section to the right of this page. Please don’t leave it too late.
The FIPJP has issued a revised set of rules for petanque. You can find them here. The new rules come into effect from 1 January 2017 and we would urge all members to familiarise themselves with them before the start of the new season. The Scottish Petanque Association will issue competition and qualifier specific rules as necessary in due course.
Good luck to Ed Strachan, Paul Fletcher, Kevin Johnstone and Derek Adam who depart soon to compete for Scotland in the Men’s Triples World Championships in Madagascar.
The SPA has decided to adopt a new system issuing and renewing petanque licences and this is now in effect for 2017 licences. To remind you, you need an SPA licence to play in SPA competitions, as well as any overseas competitions where an international licence is required. The benefit of the new system is that you will receive a high quality, waterproof credit card type licence.
The process to apply for your new 2017 licence is very straightforward. Click on the link below and click on the Join Us/Renew button.
You will need to complete the application form and you will need to have a digital photograph already stored on your computer to upload into the database (which is suitable for ID purposes, i.e. a photograph of your head and shoulders, looking square on, with a neutral background). We may ask you to send a different photograph if the one you upload isn’t suitable.
Once your application is complete and approved, we will arrange for the new licence to be delivered. It takes around 3-4 weeks and it will be sent directly to you at your home address. The new licences will be valid from 1 Jan 2017 to 31 Dec 2017.
There is no cost for your first licence each year, but if you lose it and require a replacement, there will be a charge of £5.
You will be invited to renew your licence around 28 days before expiry of your current one (i.e. in early December each year). All you need to do is check your details remain the same and renew, or edit those details which have changed.
If you have any difficulty using the system please do let me know.

Good luck to Emma Montgomery and Colin Stewart who travel to Halmstad, Sweden this week to compete in the first European Singles Championships. The competition was hastily rearranged following the late withdrawal of the original hosts and we are very grateful to the Swedish and Danish federations for agreeing to host at such short notice.
You can find out more about the competition here http://www.svenskboule.se/ECSingles2016
The 2016 SPA Masters was contested on 17 and 18 September at Troon PC. The top 12 ranked teams from the Grand Prix Series battled it out in a round robin to determine the 2016 Masters team and those who would compete for Scotland in 2017. A big thank you to Troon PC for their hospitality and the delicious lunches on both days.
At the end of play on Saturday, Triaxle were sitting in pole position with 5 wins, their only loss coming narrowly in the first round to last year’s Masters, Les Cremants. Maboule, The 3 Bears, Les Cremants and The Dukes of Marr all had 4 wins.
Sunday saw Triaxle continue to dominate, racking up another 4 wins and taking the title. The Sex Pisteols shook off their shaky performance on Saturday to win all five matches on Sunday and finish in second place. Les Cremants strong perfmornace continued, with another four wins on Sunday to take third. Maboule managed only two wins on Sunday but clung on to take fourth.
The full results are shown below. Teams 1 -4 will play as Scotland A in the Celtic Challenge at Melrose in April, Teams 5-8 will form the B squad.
Well done to all the qualifiers.
