Club Invitation to Host 2014 Events

Standard

It is that time of year again when we’d like to hear from clubs interested in hosting 2014 SPA competitions. The draft calendar has been added to the Calendar on this site (click here).  All dates and venues are TBC.

To host an SPA event a club would require 8 pistes. We’d also like the host clubs to have someone available to help with registration etc..

Could interested clubs let me know the SPA events they’d like to be considered for and also the dates of club competitions they’d like included.

We’d appreciate it if you could feed information through as soon as you can.

We hope to have a reasonably complete calendar in place by our next NEC meeting, 26.01.14.

Can you also keep us updated with any changes that may be necessary to your club details as seen on the website?

Kind regards ….Lynn

Life Membership Award: Douglas Hamilton

Douglas Hamilton - SPA Life Member

Douglas Hamilton – SPA Life Member

Following his decision to step down from the National Executive Committee for 2013/14 the SPA have awarded a Life Membership to Douglas Hamilton.

Douglas introduced petanque to the Perth area initially by getting together with a group of friends and neighbours in the St. Martin/Balbeggie region.  They initially played in their driveways on a rotation basis, sometimes playing at three different locations in one night.

Douglas and his neighbour David Blair founded Perth Petanque Club in 1990, playing for a short time at Perth College.  They were successful in persuading Perth Council to build the permanent piste on the North Inch. Douglas has been regularly elected to of the SPA National Executive Committee and was President in 1995/96 and 2011/12.

The SPA would like to say a huge thank you to Douglas for his tireless work for both his club and the SPA.

SPA Masters Results & Report

Standard

The 12 top ranked teams from the 2013 Grand Prix Series turned up a Fochabers to contest the 2013 Masters. With places up for grabs in the 2014 Celtic Challenge, Men’s World Championships, Women’s European Championships and Veteran’s European Championships there was certainly a lot to play for.

A big thank you to all the volunteers at Fochabers PC for the hot lunches on both days and the sumptuous spread of home baking.

Turning to the competition itself and the holders, the Sex Pisteols, faced off early against IPA (2nd in 2012) in the second round. The game was tense and lasted well over 2 hours. IPA took the game 13-11 to take an early advantage. However the Sex Pisteols returned to winning ways with emphatic wins against Pretty Vacant and Les Cremants which IPA lost in round 4 against Capercaillie. By the close of play on Saturday (after 6 rounds) the Sex Pisteols led on points difference from IPA with Midgetirs and Pretty Vacant one game adrift in 3rd and 4th place.

Sunday arrived with the threat of severe weather but, in the end, a little wind a heavy showers were all the players had to content with. The four leading teams all won in round 7 putting them out in front. The Sex Pisteols lost round 8 and with wins for IPA and Pretty Vacant, it looked like the Masters may have a new team name on the trophy. With all 3 leading teams winning round 9 it was getting very tight at the top, with IPA holding a game advantage. But round 10 brought all 3 leaders back level with wins for the Sex Pisteols and Pretty Vacant while IPA lost to Maboules. The title and all the prizes at stake would not be decided until the final round…

Pretty Vacant won their round 11 game and were left to watch as the Sex Pisteols played the Bears while IPA played the Champignons. IPA stumbled over the line first against the Champignons in a scrappy game 13-10. This left one game on the piste – the Sex Pisteols needed to win to retain the title. And, despite a lot of nerves, so it proved to be with a 13-11 win. The Sex Pisteols extended their winning ways in the competition to 6 consecutive years.

The final standings can be viewed here

All 4 players from the Sex Pisteols will be selected to compete in the 2014 Men’s World Championships should Scotland be given a place.

Shirley Legge and Lynn Jenkins will have the honour of forming the team to compete in the 2014 Women’s European Championships.

Players from the Midgetirs are eligible to form the team to compete in the 2014 Veteran’s European Championships.

The Sex Pisteols, Pretty Vacant, IPA and Nord Ecosse will compete as Scotland A in the Celtic Challenge.

The Midgetirs, Les Cremants, DRAM and the 3 Bears will compete as Scotland B in the Celtic Challenge.

Congratulations to all the qualifiers and commiserations to those who missed out.  SPA competitions will resume in the Spring.

SPA Triples 2013 Report

Standard

The 2013 SPA Triples was hosted by Penicuik on a cold and blustery but mainly dry 1st September.  This was the first National Competition to be held in Penicuik and for many players it was their first opportunity to try out Penicuik’s new piste.

With no power available at Penicuik’s piste it was back to an ‘old school’ pen and paper competition – a snake format over six rounds with wins and points difference separating the placings.

The competition remained tight at the top all day.  At lunch two teams (Champignons & IPA) had perfect records of three wins, with Maboules, Triaxle & Capercaillie snapping at their heels with two wins.

By the end of round 4 the Champignons were clear leaders on 4 wins +36, but IPA, Maboules and Capercaillie were still in the hunt with 3 wins each.

Round 5 saw IPA beat the Champignons and Maboules clocked up another win, leaving the top three places as follows:  Champignons 4 wins +30, IPA 4 wins +23, Maboules 4 wins+19

IPA registered a strong 13-1 win against DRAM in the final round meaning the competition would go to the wire and with Champignons drawn against Maboules the top three places could all change.  The Champignons did what they needed to (just) with a 13-7 win and took the title on the narrowest of margins.

Home Nations Report

Standard

homenations2013

Inverleith Petanque Club hosted the 2013 Home Nations on 10th and 11th August.  A total of 24 teams from England, Wales and Scotland competed over the weekend for the annual event.  With England bringing one of their strongest ever squads it would be a tough test for the Scottish and Welsh players.

True to form, England hit the front early and after 3 rounds were 8 wins ahead of Scotland and 10 wins ahead of Wales.  By Saturday night that lead had extended to 20 wins.

Overnight Standings on Saturday:  England 38 v Scotland 18 v Wales 16

In reality the question at this stage was not about who would win but by how much.  And there was still a fight to be had for second spot.

Wales seemed to step up the pace in the race for second spot on Sunday morning and pulled level with the Scots’ total by Sunday lunch.

Sunday Lunch standings:  England 56 v Scotland 26 v Wales 26

England continued to forge ahead on Sunday afternoon and kept their best round until the last, a perfect 8 wins.  Wales recorded one of their best rounds in round 10 with 5 wins compared to Scotland’s 2 which all but sealed Scotland’s fate.

Final Standings: England 75 v Wales 35 v Scotland 34

Top Team: England 8 – 12 wins +92

Top Welsh Team: Wales 2 – 7 wins +10

Top Scottish Team: Scotland 2 – 8 wins +40

Congratulations to England for once again retaining the Home Nations.  We look forward to meeting up with everyone again in England in 2014.
