SPA - SCOTTISH MASTERS 2009 - 5&6/09/09
The SPA Scottish Masters 2009 was hosted by Inverness Petanque Club at Fairways Golf Club in Inverness on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th of September.
The twelve teams that qualified for the Masters 2009 were, in alphabetical order -
Barons - Robin Gardiner, Donnie MacIntyre, Brian Ward.
Bears - Gavin Hilson, Mike Watt, Alex Davie.
Birds and Bees - Byron Milton, Bob Boyle, Istvan Poka.
Cabbage and Ribs - Fiona and Howard Tipton, Emma Montgomery, Ben Burnhill.
Champignons - John Watson, Mags and Colin Montgomery.
Hillbillies - Jean Hutcheson, Stuart Malcolm, Steve Wallace.
I PA - Derek Adam, Stephane Maurage, Colin Stewart.
Just Us - Margaret Mauchline, Mabel Danraj, Eileen Moonie.
Maboule - Dani Cassini, Zandra Boyle, Douglas Hamilton.
Midge tiers - Susan Allen, John and Norma Cameron.
Nord Ecosse - Gordon and Pat Scott, John and Christine Mudd.
Pisteols - Robbie Stronach, Lynn Jenkins, John Wilson.
With the horrendous weather that hit the north and east of Scotland, especially the Moray coast over Wednesday and Thursday teams arriving in Inverness on Friday evening had no idea what to expect with regard to the condition of the Fairways pistes. However hard work by Gordon and members of Inverness Petanque Club ensured that the pistes would be playable for Saturday morning.
The Masters, a round robin of eleven rounds, started promptly at 9:30 on Saturday under grey, blustery and showery skies but the weather improved as the day wore on.
Saturday evening, at the end of six rounds, the Pisteol were out in front with six wins followed by five teams - Barons, IPA, Maboule, Nord Ecosse and Hillbillies - each with four wins. The remaining six teams could only muster ten wins between them.
Sunday morning and the Pisteols met their bogy team - the Ladies of Just Us - and after a sleepless night, according to Robbie, worrying about it duly lost! By lunch time with nine rounds played, three teams - Pisteols, IPA and Maboule - were out in front on seven wins followed by Barons, Nord Ecosse and Bears on six, five and four wins respectfully.
At the end of play and eleven
rounds the Pisteols prevailed with nine wins followed by Maboule on eight wins
and IPA and Barons with seven wins each.

THE WAVERLY VINTNERS PAIRS -
31/08/09
The Waverly Vintners Pairs was held on Perth Petanque Club’s piste at the North Inch Perth on a not unpleasant late summer’s day.
Ten eager Perth club members had turned up by 9.30 and were hopeful that some visitors would roll up before 10 o’clock. But nary a one - not even that grand supporter of club events Mr Twechar John.
The Waverly Vintners was originally a closed competition - Perth Petanque club’s doubles trophy - so back to the past for the WV 2009!
So with five teams, a leisurely four game round robin was enjoyed by the Perth club members and the outcome went to the last round with Steve and Douglas getting the better of Alice and Ed.

THE FRANCIS FABER MEMORIAL
PAIRS - 11/08/09
The Francis Faber Memorial Pairs was held at Inverleith Petanque Club.
A fine summer’s day drew fourteen teams, made up of players from the clubs of Inverleith, Fochabers, Perth and Stirling to register for our ‘favourite’ sadly departed Frenchman Francis Faber to play for his Trophy. And where were the Troonies this time? Doing battle on behalf of Scotland in the European Cup for Clubs in Monte Carlo, a report on their exploits will be posted on their return.
Two leagues of four and two of three (why not one of six?) were played before lunch and in the afternoon a “Swiss” for the top eight teams for the Trophy and two leagues of three, the winners to play off for the Plate.
We were warned by Monty that regardless of the good weather Francis always ‘rained (not the word Monty used!) on his parade’ and sure enough midway through the morning a ten minute deluge, what a bladder for a small Frenchman!
The Trophy produced keenly fought games and was won by the dynamic duo of Wilson and Stronach after defeating first Mabel Danraj and Finlay Ross then Derek Adam and Stephane Maurage and in the final round Judy Collier and Zandra Boyle, winners against Jean and Henry Hutcheson and Ben ‘poker face’ Burnhill and Colin Stewart (13-0 a little bird told us - kiss the Lady boys!).
Mags and Monty Montgomery got the better of Alice Sheach and Douglas Hamilton to win the Plate.

SPA - SCOTTISH TRIPLES - 19/07/09
SPA Scottish Triples was held at Inverleith Park hosted by the Inverleith Petanque Club on Sunday the 19th of July.
Twelve teams rolled up on a grey morning to the welcoming smell of bacon or sausage butties and coffee. Of the twelve teams nine were Grand Prix teams, albeit a couple of heavyweights were missing, so a good dog eat dog fight was anticipated!
The morning session was simple - three leagues of four, top two from each league plus the two best thirds qualifying for the afternoon Swiss and glory.
With the weather as fickle as ever, sun, cloud, wind and the odd spot of rain and add to that the incessant noise of chain saws and tom-toms from the Fair in the park adjoining the piste, play began. The anticipated dog fight came to pass - the Bears and Inverleith Petanque Athletes (winners and third respectively at GP3) were relegated to the plate and Birds and Bees only squeezed into the main on points difference!
The afternoon ‘Swiss’ progressed and the two unbeaten teams - Los Amigos, who defeated Cabbage and Ribs and Silence is Golden, and Maboule winners against Nord Ecosse and Midgetiers met to decide the destination of the Scottish Triples.
Los Amigos romped ahead and were 7-0 up after two ends, but at 9-2 down Maboule, after a telling off from Aunty Zandra, woke up, pulled up their socks and ground out a 13-9 victory. Inverleith Petanque Athletes reached 13 points before the Bears to win Plate.

Thanks, once again, to Inverleith Petanque Club for their hospitality, bacon butties and stovies and gateau at lunch time and to Derek for the smooth running of the competition.

THE WILLIAM LEISHMAN
MEMORIAL TROPHY - 12/07/09
The William Leishman Memorial Trophy was held by the Ayr Petanque Club.
On a dull morning fourteen players from Ayr, Perth and Twecher ,guess who, turned up bright eyed and bushy tailed to compete for the elegant new WLM Trophy on APP’s piste at the Scottish Bowling Centre in Ayr.
A disappointing number of competitors considering Troon, the hotbed of west coast pétanque, is but a stone’s throw up the road - perhaps the 10:30 start was a tad early for Chuck McCosh!
Six teams were formed, four doubles and two triples, using Adrian’s unique ’card trick’ method and played a five game round robin.
The weather held, cool one minute, a hint of rain then jumpers off the next, and play commenced at 10:30.
At lunch time the raffle was drawn - a sumptuous affair, the prizes outnumbering the players about four to one - see what you Troonies missed!
The outcome of the Trophy went to the wire but Mary, Monica and Adrian held on defeating Charles and John in the final round to win all five games.
The trophy was presented by William Leishman’s daughter Pat Ashwell, who was visiting from Brighton, to the winners Mary, Monica and Adrian.

SPA Singles &
Shooting Championship 2009
The 2009 Singles Championship started off promisingly but halfway through the first game the heavy rain arrived. Thankfully it only lasted a short time and by the end of the first game the rain had gone. The weather for the rest of the day remained mainly sunny with a little bit of cloud.
There were 23 people participating in the Singles Championship and the top 16 qualified to participate in the afternoon session which consisted of four games in the Swiss system.
In a repeat of one of last years semi-finals Robbie Stronach took revenge over Ed Strachan to qualify for the final. In the other semi, Lynn Jenkins triumphed over Brian Ward. In an all Fochabers final, Lynn moved up a gear and raced in to a commanding lead. Robbie rallied to pull back some points but Lynn finished him off to win the 2009 Singles Championship.
In the plate, the winners of two leagues fought it out to claim this trophy. In his first season of Petanque and his first SPA competition, Henry Hutcheson from the Perth Club, qualified to take on Colin Montgomerie in the Plate final. The wily old Monty triumphed to win the plate, with threats of not coaching any more Perth players. In a generous gesture Monty presented Henry with a bottle for his achievements in his first event as it was also noted that Henry qualified for the knockout phase of the shooting event.
Qualification for the shooting competition took part in the morning and the top 8 players went through to a straight knockout phase. There was a playoff for the eighth position as Finlay Ross and Ed Strachan had the same score. Ed managed to just pip Finlay in the playoff to complete the top eight. The knockout took place over the afternoon and was fitted in, in between the Singles matches. Fresh from her Singles win Lynn Jenkins strolled into the shooting final where she came up against the in-form Howard Tipton. Howard raced into a commanding lead from which Lynn was unable to recover. Howard was crowned the 2009 Shooting Champion.

and the catering staff for organising the lunch time food and all the other
things that made this event a success. Our thanks also go to the team who setup
the shooting apparatus. Finally thanks to the Inverleith club for hosting this
event which was run very smoothly and was thoroughly enjoyed.

Finlay Morrison Trophy
On Sunday 28th June, Perth hosted the Finlay Morrison Trophy competition at the
North Inch Perth. A new Trophy is being played for this year, a Quaich kindly
donated by Ed Strachan, to replace the original Trophy which has been 'mislaid'.
The weather was not great being very overcast but at least dry.Four
visitors turned up and along with Perth members six teams, four pairs and two
triples, played five games.
The winners were John Wilson and Stuart Malcolm,
second John Watson and Christine Crawford and
third Mabel Danraj and Findlay Ross.

Summary
SPA Grand Prix 3 was hosted by Troon Petanque Club at the Rugby Club in Troon on Sunday 15th June.
The players who represented clubs from Inverness, Fochabers, Perth, Stirling, Inverleith, Troon and Ayr who played in the two previous GP’s registered fourteen teams and were joined by a further two teams from Troon making a round number to play in GP3.
The format was a six round Snake and, in spite of a doom and gloom weather forecast and news of thunder, lightning and torrential rain over parts of Scotland, Troon was wall to wall sunshine! On a piste ‘of two halves’ (had to get a footie reference in for the benefit of Rabid, sorry, Rangers supporters Susie and Eck) play commenced at 10 o’clock
Regardless of only playing six rounds play continued until after six o’clock. Did I hear talk of timed games for SPA events? No doubt a hot topic for future debate and all opinions looked forward to with anticipation and trepidation!

SPA - GRAND PRIX 2 -
25/05/09
SPA Grand Prix 2 was hosted by Perth Petanque Club at the North Inch in Perth on Sunday 25th May.
The players representing clubs from Inverness, Fochabers, Perth, Stirling, Inverleith, Troon and Ayr who registered fifteen teams to play in GP1 turned up in good time at Perth for GP 2.
The format was a seven round Snake and, in fine weather and on a fast piste, play commenced at 10 o’clock.
Unlike at Fochabers no thunder, lightening, rain and hail deluged the piste only the sound of hootin’ and hollerin’ which was thought to be coming from those diehard Rangers supporters Suzy, don’t gie me a green raffle ticket, Allan and Eck Davie, but no, it was from nubile women and macho men playing in a volleyball tournament adjacent to the piste!
Play continued sedately on a sunny afternoon until the early evening.

INVERLEITH DOMINATE!
The Margaret Burden Memorial Pairs, which raises money for St Colomba’s Hospice, was held at Inverleith Petanque Club.
A magnificent sunny spring day enticed twenty two teams, made up of players from the clubs of Inverleith, Fochabers, Perth, Stirling, Troon and visitors from East Anglia and La Rochelle and not forgetting the ‘Terror from Twecher’, to register to battle it out for the prestigious Margaret Burden Trophy.
Four leagues of four and one of six were played before lunch and in the afternoon a “Swiss” for the top eight teams for the Margaret Burden Trophy and a random draw of three games for the remaining fourteen teams for the Plate.
The Trophy produced some keenly fought games and was won by Colin and Mags Montgomery in an all Inverleith final who beat, first, John Watson and Christine Crawford, Birds and Bees, then five times consecutive winners Byron Milton and Stephane Maurage, Birds and Bees / Inverleith, before finally dispatching Ben (in the blue corner at 210 lbs) Burnhill and Colin Stewart - winners against John Wilson and Robbie gid ba’ Stronach (Fochabers) and Robin Gardiner and Bill fae Troon - in the final round.
In the Plate only one team won all three games and that was Finlay Ross playing with his granny Mabel Danraj. Several teams were on two wins and the best on points difference was Dani Cassini and Marina Collins.

The event was most successful and raised the handsome sum of over £300:00 for the Hospice which was much appreciated by Ernie Burden and his sons.
A grand day out, including an excellent curry at lunch time courtesy of Colin M and John P, was enjoyed by all.

SPA Grand Prix 1 was hosted by Fochabers Petanque Club at the Cricket Club in Fochabers on Sunday 26th March.

Come 1 o’clock the heavens
opened, thunder, lightening, rain and hail deluged the piste and play was
suspended for an hour, fortuitously it was the denner oor, thereafter we were
blessed by a fine afternoon and play continued until nearly seven thirty.

The SPRING FLING was hosted by Fochabers Petanque Club at the Cricket Club in Fochabers on Saturday 25th March.
On a pleasant afternoon, and not so early evening, thirty players from a’ th’ airts, Troon, Ayr, Inverleith, Stirling, Perth, Aberdeen - Aberdeen? was Mr Carter on the comeback trail! - and Fochabers making fifteen teams, enjoyed good crack and a good workout before Sunday’s GP1.

4th - the above mentioned Mr and Mrs Carter.

THE EARLY BIRDS at the BIRDS and BEES - 19/04/09
The second Open Competition of the 2009 Season was the EARLY BIRDS hosted by the Birds and Bees Pétanque Club at the Birds and Bees in Causewayhead, Stirling.
On another beautiful calm, sunny and warm spring Sunday morning twenty four players, making twelve teams, rolled up bright and early to the Birds and Bees.
The teams were - Zandra Boyle & Carol Bretenoux, Jim & Margaret Wilkie, John & Norma Cameron, Bob Boyle & Byron Milton and Paul & Pierre Bretenoux all from the Bees, Mabel Danraj & Margaret Mauchline, Jean Hutcheson & Finlay Ross, Alice Sheach & Ed Strachan all from Perth, Adrian Ford & Istvan Poka from Ayr, John Wilson & Robbie Stronach from Fochabers, Aileen Moonie & Brian Ward from Perth/Troon and John Watson & Douglas Hamilton from Bees/ Perth.
Three leagues of four were played
before lunch and in the afternoon a “Swiss” for the top eight teams for the
Early Birds Trophy and a league of four for the Plate.

In an early shock, last week’s winners of the Fenton Quaich, John and Robbie were not in the top eight for the afternoon - “It wisnae me” said Robbie “It wis the big loon.” - but won the Plate as consolation.
In the Early Birds, John and Douglas overcame John and Norma and Paul and Pierre to meet Ed and Alice, who had beaten Adrian and Istvan and Bob and Byron, in the final round and ground out a satisfying 13 - 2 victory - a turn around from having lost the first game of the day to Jean and Finlay by 13 - 1!

PERTH
PETANQUE - FENTON QUAICH- 12/04/09
The first Club Open Competition of the 2009 Season was the FENTON QUAICH run by
the Perth Petanque Club at the North Inch Perth.
On a beautiful calm, sunny and warm spring day with coffee and hot cross buns
for 50p only fourteen players, 9 from Perth, 3 from the Bees and 2 from
Fochabers, forego rolling their Easter Eggs turned up to contest the once
prestigious Fenton Quaich.
WHERE HAVE ALL THE PLAYERS GONE? Although it is early in the season I hope that
the last two weeks’ low turnout is not an indication of those absent players’
lack of interest in competing in Club Open and SPA Competitions during the rest
of the year. Six teams, two triples and four pairs played five rounds.
The winning of the competition was the result of the Madams (who chose that name
for two alpha males?) who where trouncing FASCH (a big boy wouldn’t tell me what
it stands for!) by 11 to 4 decided to go AWOL and lost 13-11!

SPA - NORTH v SOUTH - 06/04/09
The first SPA Competition of the 2009 Season is the NORTH v the SOUTH hosted by Perth Petanque Club at the North Inch in Perth.
“REVENGE IS SWEET - NORTH UNSTOPPABLE, WELL ALMOST!”
On a bright and sunny morning twenty four players turned up - 11 from Perth, 6 from Fochabers, 5 from Inverleith and 2 fae Troon. Where were Inverness, Mr President’s, Birds and Bees and other Inverleith and Troon stalwarts?
Battle commenced at 10:30, a Melee triples with four teams per side playing four rounds.
Lunch was taken after two rounds with the North romping to an 8 games to 0 lead.
Desperation set in for the South,
and with the port and cheese to the fore thanks to Mike, the first three games
in the afternoon went to the North. Then disaster! North, with last year’s 12 -
4 drubbing in mind, and intent on a whitewash dropped a game to 12 thanks to
Robbie - a big boy telt me to say that!

However normal service was resumed and the end result was - NORTH 15 - SOUTH 1
Thanks to Gavin, Mike, Alex, Lynn, Robbie and John from Fochabers and Mabel, Margaret, Eileen, Sheila, Ian and Douglas from Perth, north of the Tay, who represented the North.
