SPA Masters Report

The top 12 ranked teams from the 2015 Grand Prix Series contested the SPA Masters at Perth on 12/13 September. As ever, the Masters is highly competitive with places in next year’s Celtic Challenge, Women’s European Championships, Men’s World Championships and European Veteran’s Championships up for grabs.  The volunteers at Perth did a great job preparing the pistes and serving up delicious lunches on both days – a very big thank you to them.

As ever, the format was a round robin with 6 matches on Saturday and 5 on Sunday.

At the conclusion of play on Saturday, after a day of rain and wind, Triaxle were in the lead on 5 wins +25 with the Sex Pisteols in second on 5 wins + 16.  Five teams were snapping at the leader’s heels with 4 wins and so it was anyone’s competition.

As play on Sunday progressed, the lead changed hands several times.  In the end, Les Cremants emerged victorious, pipping the Sex Pisteols into 2nd with Pretty Vacant in 3rd only by virtue of less point scored.  Triaxle were 4th.  All 4 teams will be invited to represent Scotland at the 2016 Celtic Challenge in Wales.

Alison Swiffin, Christine Thomson and Mari Snell will therefore be invited represent Scotland at the 2016 European Women’s Championships.  Ed Strachan will be invited to form a team for the 2016 Men’s World Championships should Scotland qualify. The eligible players in the team will also be invited to represent Scotland at the 2016 European Veteran’s Championship.

Congratulations to the winners and qualifiers.

SPA Doubles

13 pairs competed for the SPA Doubles title on 23 August, held at Penicuik PC.

With no power available at Penicuik’s piste, it was back to pen and paper and a format of leagues (3,3,3,4) in the morning, followed by a knock-out for top 8 qualifiers in the afternoon for the main competition and a round robin for the plate.

The winners of the plate were the Hungarian father and son team of Rezso and Gabor Peli, narowly pipping Colin Montgomery and Bob Macdonald on points difference.

The placings in the main competition were:

1st – Paul Fletcher and Kevin Johnstone

2nd – Alison Swiffin and Ed Strachan

3rd – Robbie Stronach and John Wilson

Congratulations to the winners, in particular Paul who won both the Singles and Doubles titles over the weekend.

Next up is the SPA Masters at Perth on 12/13 Sep.

SPA Singles & Shooting

A total of 29 players contested the SPA Singles title at Inverleith PC on Saturday 22nd August.  As usual we were treated to breakfast rolls and a hearty lunch by our hosts, many thanks to Inverleith for their hospitality.

The format was a 6 rounds ‘swiss ladder’ with players ranked on wins and then points difference.

Heading into the final round, previous winner Robbie Stronach looked like he would once again lift the title as he was the only player with a perfect record.  However Ed Strachan had other ideas an beat Robbie in the final game.  Paul Fletcher (ranked second going into the last round) beat Kevin Johnstone convincingly in the final round and, in the end Paul finished in first place.  Robbie was second and Colin Stewart scraped into third following a 13-12 win in round 6 against Rezso Peli.

Paul Fletcher and Emma Montgomery (the highest ranked woman) will be invited to represent Scotland if we are invited to compete in the European Singles Championships in 2016.

The full results are shown at the bottom of the page.

In the gaps between Singles games, players were invited to register a qualifying score in the shooting, with the top 4 placed players to shoot out in semis and a final. The qualifying rounds were tight, but the top 4 were: Reszo Peli – 21, Kevin Johnstone – 21, Colin Stewart – 20 and Derek Adam – 19.

In the first semi Derek defeated Reszo by 25-8.  In the second, Colin defeated Kevin by 34-23.

In the 3rd place playoff, Rezso narrowly beat Kevin 15-14. The final was equally close with Colin beating Derek 23-21 (Colin hit 2 jacks in the final discipline to take the win).

The weather stayed fine and thanks not only to John and Derek for preparing the piste, Ed and Alison who devised and ran the competition and Ann for organizing the lunch but to all the players who attended and made Perth Petanque’s 25th Season Birthday bash a success and happy occasion.

Our next competition is the Frank Malcolm Melee on 30th August and we look forward to hosting the SPA Masters on the 12th and 13th of September.

30th Anniversary Celebrations and SPA Triple Results

The weekend of 11/12 July saw the SPA formally celebrate our 30th Anniversary in Fochabers.

The weekend started on Saturday afternoon with Fochabers PC hosting the ‘Summer Fling’ – a friendly open competition. As well as many of the usual players we were delighted to find players from nearby Portknockie joined in too. With play starting at 1.30, the 14 teams were divided into leagues (2 leagues of 4 and 2 leagues of 3). The top two from each league would play in the main knockout while the others would thrash it out for the plate. Games were limited to 11 points so all the matches could be squeezed in in time for everyone to get ready for the evening celebrations. Winners of the main were Robbie and Emma.

On Saturday evening, 30 players (shame it wasn’t more) were greeted to a glass of fizz and sat down to a sumptuous dinner in the Gordon Arms. The SPA would like to say a big thank you to all who contributed the vast table of memorabilia, with photos, newspaper cuttings and other papers from days gone by. It was an evening to reminisce and reflect on the contribution of all of those volunteers who, over the years, having given much their spare time to further the SPA’s cause, as well as to remember those who are no longer with us. Much merriment was had and the conversations went on in to the wee hours.

On to the Triples on Sunday morning. With a few sore heads, 8 teams registered to play. The format would be a round robin of 7 rounds, with games played to 11 points. Play was brisk and, although play started at 9.45, 4 rounds were fully complete before lunch at 1 o’clock. At this point, the Sex Pisteols were out in the lead having won all their games in the morning, with five teams two games adrift. As usual we were treated to a feast at lunch, Lasagne this time, along with sandwiches and home baking.

Play finished not long after 4 pm and, in the end, the Sex Pisteols – Robbie, Derek & Colin – hung on to win with 6 wins from 7. In second were last year’s winners Lynn, Shirley and Richard (this year playing under their usual name of Pretty Vacant) on 5 wins and third were Les Champignons – Emma, Mags and Monty – with 4 wins and better points difference.

A huge thank you to Fochabers PC for hosting and in particular to Shirley Legge for organising the whole weekend – the Summer Fling, prizes, dinner, decorating the hall, collecting memorabilia etc etc etc.
