SPA Grand Prix 1 2011

Standard

SPA Grand Prix 1 was hosted by Troon Petanque Club on their piste at Marr Rugby Club on the 19th of April. Troon, the venue for the Home Nations in two weeks time, was chosen for GP1 to give teams already qualified for the CC the chance to reaquaint themselves with the piste – and easy it is not!

Players from Inverness, Fochabers, Perth, Stirling, Inverleith and Troon registered fourteen teams to play in GP1 – note an even number – and bodes well for GP‘s 2 and 3.

A revised format has been introduced this year – leagues in the morning with the best eight teams playing a modified knockout of 3 rounds to determine the winner and the top eight places and, in this case, the remaining six teams in a six team league – three games – playing off for the Plate – see Web Site for “Competition Rules and IQS Series 2011”

Afternoon play in the ’knockout’ produced some tight games. The Bears experienced two 13-12 games, against Acorns and Maboules, only to loose out to the Migetiers – winners against Deuchars IPA and Pretty Vacant – for the shiny new GP1 Trophy. Maboule also endured two 13-12 games before squeezing past Pretty Vacant to take third place.

The Champignons won their three games in the afternoon to claim the Plate.

Thanks to John W for organising the competition, Umpire Byron M for keeping an eagle eye on the proceedings and to Troon Petanque Club members for their hospitality and sustenance.

SPA North v South 2011

Standard

The first SPA Competition of the 2011 Season is the NORTH v the SOUTH hosted by Perth Petanque Club at the North Inch in Perth.

“ANOTHER CLOSE AFFAIR”

Here we are again – the start of another Petanque season and on an early spring day of sunshine, cloud and the odd shower the SPA were hoping for a repeat of last years turnout of 55 players. We were not too disappointed, 44 happy bunnies emerged from winter hibernation – 15 from Inverness, 6 from Fochabers, 12 from Perth, 3 from Inverleith, 2 from the Bees, and 6 from Troon. An encouraging turnout.

Play commenced at 11:00, 6 triples and 2 pairs teams per side playing five rounds. Lunch was taken after two rounds with the match tied at 8 games all.

After lunch North powered away and after 4 rounds was leading by 20 games to 12.

South made a spirited comeback in round 5, winning 6 games but North held on taking the 2 games they required for victory.

So the end result was – NORTH 22 – SOUTH 18

Thanks to Fraser S, Stuart T, Christine T, Calum T, Pat S, Gordon S, Moira P, Bob P, Duncan F, Jim McC, Christine S, Jim S, Margaret S, Marcus G and Harvey M from Inverness, Gavin, Alex, Robbie, John, Shirley and Richard from Fochabers and Paul B from the Bees who represented the North and Jean, Stuart, Ian, Eileen, Mabel, Margaret, Henry, John T, Alice, Ed, Alison and Douglas, from Perth, Christine, Mari, and Art from Inverleith, John W from the Bees and Brian, Istvan, Malcolm, Donnie, Paul and Kevin from Troon who represented the South.

SPA Triples 2010

Standard

SPA Scottish Triples was held at Inverleith Park hosted by the Inverleith Petanque Club on Sunday the 19th of September.

On a gey driech and wet autumn morning eleven teams signed up – you will note an odd number yet again – for the Triples. However service was normal in the clubhouse – bacon or sausage butties and coffee on tap!

Ten teams were Grand Prix participants – Pisteols, IPA, Champignons, Nord Ecosse, Maboules, Pretty Vacant, Capercaillie, Pointiers, Wee 3 and Christine’s Boys – the eleventh was the welcome appearance of John Wooliscroft and Chantal Dessailly who teamed up with Harvey from Calboakie.

The morning session was two leagues of four and one league of three. .

With improving weather play began with the top two from each league plus the two best thirds qualifying for the afternoon ‘Modified Rolling Knockout for Eight Teams’.

The remaining three teams were joined by our 8 New Zealand friends and Art from Inverleith who also made up three teams – Sue, Jean and Charles, Trevor, Bob and Colleen and Bill Lynn and Art.

The afternoon ‘MRKfET’ progressed and the two undefeated teams – Pisteols, who defeated last years winners Maboules and IPA met Pointiers, winners against Christine’s Boys and Nord Ecosse to decide the destination of the Scottish Triples.

The Pisteols chose to play on the ‘hilly’ piste, however the Pointiers took the initiative and an 11-6 lead but a 4 by the Pisteols made it 11-10. Three tight ends ensued, calling ’Umpire’ on one occasion, and 12-12 was reached. The last end resulted in a 13-12 win for Pisteols and a round of applause from the spectators for an exciting and skilful final.

In the Plate participants were divided into two leagues of three with the winners of each league meeting to decide its fate.

Pretty Vacant overcame stiff opposition from NZ 3 to keep the Plate in Scotland.

The SPA TRIPLES

1st – Pisteols – Paul B, Robbie S and John Wilson.

2nd – Pointiers- Ed S, Alice S and Henry H.

3rd – Champignons – Mari S and Colin & Mags M.

The PLATE

New Zealanders’ Visit to Scotland

Standard

Following the cancellation of the Abergavenny Seniors Challenge between Wales, Scotland and New Zealand, eight of the New Zealanders said they were visiting Scotland and asked if the SPA could arrange a match for them against a Scottish Seniors team.

Their visit coincided with the SPA Scottish Triples weekend so it was decided to play the match on the Saturday and invite the NZ players to join in the ‘Plate’ on the Sunday.

The match was held at Inverleith Park and hosted by the Inverleith Petanque Club on Saturday 18th September.

Saturday was, thankfully, a fine autumn day and the teams assembled for an eleven o’clock ’kick off’.

The four New Zealand teams of Trevor & Sue, Bob & Colleen, Jean & Charles and Bill & Lynn were joined by Colin M & Nigel to make up five teams (so five rounds could be played) lined up against John P & Allan M, Bob B & Dave P, Jean & Henry H, Sandra B & Douglas H and John tartan trews W & Pat M.

At lunch time, after two rounds the score was 5 – 5 and after four rounds the score was

10 all, so all to play for in round five! Bob & Dave, having romped through four rounds, had their wings clipped by Jean & Charles however three of the remaining games four games went Scotland’s way and the final result was Scotland 13 – New Zealand 12.

After a most friendly encounter enjoyed by all, we retired to the Clubhouse for a veritable feast provided by Mags and her crew. After the Selkirk Grace, beautifully delivered by Pat, we all tucked into soused herring followed by haggis, tatties and neeps and finished of with fruit crumble and custard! All of us appreciated the effort put in by Mags, Colin and members of Inverleith Petanque Club for what was a grand day with great crack and most important of all meeting and making new friends from the world of Petanque.

SPA Masters 2010

Standard

SPA MASTERS 2010 was hosted by Troon Petanque Club on their piste at Marr Rugby Club over the weekend of the 04th and 05th of September.

Troon, the venue for the 2011 Home Nations, was chosen for the Masters to give the eight teams qualifying for the CC the chance to experience the piste.

The twelve teams and 41 players (five teams have 4 players) represented clubs from Inverness (1), Fochabers (3), Perth (2), Stirling (2), Inverleith (3) and Troon (1).

With a ‘round robin’ format, 6 games were played on Saturday and 5 games on Sunday.

Saturday was a sunny and warm day and the players, breakfasted and with score cards in hand, were on parade by 9:30.

Umpire for the weekend Byron M welcomed the teams and asked for a good clean fight, reminded teams that slow play would be penalised – he would be ‘watching’ – get it! – and the fewer times he was called upon the happier he would be.

The day ended with the Pisteols in the lead on 6 out of 6 closely followed IPA on 5 wins and the Bears, Les Champignons and Maboules were still in the hunt with 4 wins each.

Sunday, again fine weather , progressed and by lunch time IPA had caught up with the Pisteols on 8 wins each, Goldilocks and two Bears having spoiled the Pisteols 100% game plan.

Showdown time – high noon plus two – game 10 – Pisteols vs. IPA – Pisteols prevail, win their 11th game and retain the Scottish Masters Trophy.

IPA held on to second place on points difference from The Bears. Les Champignons, also on points difference, pipped Maboules for 4th place.

European Championships 2011 – Scottish representatives – Pisteols.

Home Nations 2011 – teams 1 to 4 qualify as Scotland 1, teams 5 to 8 as Scotland 2

Home Nations 2011 – teams 1 to 8 qualify.

Thanks to Derek for organising the competition, umpire Byron and to Troon Petanque Club members for their hospitality and sustenance – the goulash and chilli was yummy!

SPA Singles, Shooting & Doubles 2010

Standard

The SPA Singles and Shooting on Saturday 21st and the SPA Doubles on Sunday 22nd of August were held at Perth Petanque’s Piste on the North Inch in Perth.

Saturday’s weather forecast wasn‘t promising, however the early morning scotch mist didn’t turn to rain and the sun put his hat on and came out to play!

Players from The Birds and Bees, Fochabers, Inverleith, Inverness, Perth and Troon numbering twenty five turned up on parade.

Twenty five, an awkward number, were formed into eight leagues – seven of three players and one of four players and battle commenced.

Sixteen players qualified and were divided into two modified Swiss leagues, the winner of each league to play off for the honour of lifting the Trophy.

After some close games Paul B of the Bees met John W of Fochabers in the playoff to decide who was to be Singles Champion 2010.

Paul took the early initiative and built up a commanding lead but uncharacteristically gave away six points in two ends and John didn’t look back and emerged the winner!

John, normally a man of few words, was ecstatic, announcing –

“It’s taken me twenty six years and six finals to win the Scottish Singles!”

Robbie S, Fochabers, prevailed over Mari S Inverleith, in the third/fourth playoff

SPA Singles Trophy –

Winner – John Wilson.

Runner Up – Paul Bretenoux.

Third – Robbie Stronach.

Fourth – Mari Snell

The other players were –

Derek A, Paddy H, Stephane M, Mags & Colin M, and Fiona & Howard T, – Inverleith,

Christine & John M, Pat & Gordon S and Christine, Calum & Stewart T – Inverness,

Douglas H, Jean & Henry H and Frazer S – Perth.

Malcolm McK, Istvan P and Brian W – Troon.

The Shooting Competition, set up by Brian, Istvan and Malcolm, was run at the same time as the Singles. Most of the players entered in the Singles tried their hand at the Shooting Competition. With three team leagues in the Singles those sitting out took their turn at competing and scoring. Eight ‘tireurs’ qualified for the knockout stage ending up with Derek A meeting and defeating Colin M in a low scoring final.

SPA Shooting Trophy –

Winner – Derek Adam.

Runner Up – Colin Montgomery.

Semi-finalists – Robbie Stronach and Istvan Poka.

Sunday loomed sunny, bright and breezy!

Thirteen teams, made up of most of Saturdays worthies, from The Birds and Bees, Fochabers, Inverleith, Inverness, Perth and Troon turned up to compete for the SPA Doubles Trophy.

Note the odd number again! So three leagues of three and one of four for the morning session with eight teams qualifying for the Trophy and a modified Swiss in the afternoon

leaving five (odd!) teams for the Plate, so a five team league, games played to nine points.

The Bad Boys – Dave P & Bob B were on fire, powering their way to a showdown with an equally upbeat pair The Acorns – Istvan P & Brian W to decide the2010 Doubles Champions.

The Acorns retained the coche and ground their way to 10,11,and 12-4 but then The Bad Boys won an end and changed the direction of play to across the piste and at 10-12 Dave dragged the coche to his first two boules and a 13-12 victory!

SPA Doubles Trophy –

Winners – The Bad Boys – Dave Patterson & Bob Boyle – Birds and Bees.

Runners Up – The Acorns – Istvan Poka & Brian Ward – Troon.

Third – Pisteols – Robbie Stronach & John Wilson – Fochabers.

SPA Doubles Plate –

Winners – The Champignons – Mags & Colin Montgomery – Imverleith.

Runners Up – The Campers – Jean & Henry Hutcheson – Perth.

The other teams were –

Almost Vacant – Chris S & Richard C – Fochabers,

Frado – Frazer S & Douglas H and Just Us – Eileen M & John S – Perth,

Gie Us the Viskey – Mari S & Bill McM and I P A – Derek A & Colin S – Inverleith,

Nord Ecosse1 – Gordon S & John M and Nord Ecosse2 – Pat S & Christine M – Inverness,

The Umps – Byron M – Birds and Bees & Stefan M – Inverleith.

Thanks to Derek A for organising play, to Perth members for hospitality and with fair weather and a good turn out an excellent weekend was enjoyed by all!

SPA Grand Prix 3 2010

Standard

SPA Grand Prix 3 was hosted by Fochabers Petanque Club on Sunday 6th June.

Players representing clubs from Inverness, Fochabers, Perth, Stirling, Inverleith and Troon registered thirteen teams to play in GP3. Maybe the forecasted weather kept some of the other teams away for the final round of the GP Series.

The format was a seven round Snake and, with fortification from Gavin’s supply of Tea and Coffee along with a delicate display of biscuits, the teams awaited the decision of the umpire as to whether the piste was playable. After much deliberation and, with the rain looking as if it might clear, the go-ahead was given and the teams splashed onto the piste.

Some big team names seem to falter in this final round which led to some new team names appearing in the top 3. Once more one of the last games on the piste was crucial with Capercaillie overcoming Cabbage and Ribs to snatch 2nd place with four wins. In third place was Nord Ecosse of Inverness also with four wins.

However it was the Midgetirs from Stirling with 5 wins who triumphed in Grand Prix 3.

Thanks to Derek for organising the competition and keeping the league table up to date to ensure the teams knew what was required to qualify. Also thanks to Byron for umpiring the event. Finally, thanks to the Fochabers club for their hospitality and for hosting the final round of the Grand Prix Series.

Standard

SPA Grand Prix 2 was hosted by Inverness Petanque Club on Sunday 16th May.

Players representing clubs from Inverness, Fochabers, Perth, Stirling, Inverleith and Troon registered eighteen teams to play in GP2, an increase of three from GP1. The three extra teams, all from Inverness, were the Harvey Smiths, the Fairway Drifters and the Simpolthoms. It is hoped that these three teams will venture east to Fochabers on the 6th of June for GP3.

The format was a six round Snake and, on a sunny Highland morning and most of the players fortified with either a Fairways ‘full Scottish’ or bacon rolls and coffee, play commenced at 10 o’clock. Apart from a couple of sharp showers the weather throughout the day was fine and warm and play continued until 6:30.

As has become a habit at competitions this season, the last game on piste was crucial to the outcome. The Champignons struggling to a fifth win over Just Us and, with superior points difference over I P A, stole second place.

The Pisteols with a full house of six wins retained the GP2 Trophy.

Thanks to Derek for organising the competition, umpires Mags, Colin (“I will do a measure when I‘ve finished the end“ – quite right!), Stephan and Bob – no eagle eyed Byron this time, to Fairways for sustenance and Inverness Petanque Club for their hospitality.

SPA North v South

Standard

The first SPA Competition of the 2010 Season is the NORTH v the SOUTH hosted by Perth Petanque Club at the North Inch in Perth on 28th March.

“A CLOSE AFFAIR”

With fingers crossed for good weather and remembering to put forward our clocks the SPA hoped for a reasonable turnout to the start of Season 2010.

We were not disappointed, the sun was shining and fifty five players, yes 55, were at the piste by 10:15 – 18 from Inverness, 8 from Fochabers, 13 from Perth, 8 from Inverleith,

4 from the Bees, and 4 from Troon.

What a wonderful turnout!

Battle commenced at 10:30, triples with nine teams per side playing four rounds.

Lunch was taken after two rounds with the North leading by 10 games to 8.

South changed gear in round 3 to take the lead 14 – 13 and on to round 4.

With one game left on the piste North had retaken the lead by 1 game, could South force a draw? With the score at 12 – 11 to South North conjured up 2 points to win the game and the match.

So the end result was – NORTH 19 – SOUTH 17

Thanks to Jim R, Fraser, Gavin T, John, Harvey, Stuart, Pat, Christine M, Moira, Duncan, Jim McC, Ernie, Gordon H, Gordon S, Bob, Christine R, Christine T and Christine S from Inverness and Gavin H, Gavin S (Bees), Alex, Lynn, Robbie, John, Shirley, Chris, and Richard from Fochabers who represented the North and Stuart, Lindsey, Mark, Elsie, Jean, Henry, Eileen, Mabel, Ian, Alice, Margaret, Douglas, and Sheila from Perth, Mags, Colin, Mari, Christine, Andy, Art, Dani, and Finlay from Inverleith, John, Christine and Caroline from the Bees and Donnie, Brian, Istvan and Malcolm from Troon who represented the South.
