Perth Petanque celebrated their 25th season at the Fenton Quaich Competition on Sunday 2nd August.
Players from Inverness, Fochabers, Perth, Inverleith, Birds & Bees, Tweed Valley, Troon and Ayr, 44 in all making up 16 pairs and 4 triples teams, congregated at our North Inch piste to cross boules for the coveted Fenton Quaich which was, fittingly, Perth Petanque’s first trophy!
The morning session was 3 timed games in 5 leagues of 4 teams. A buffet lunch was partaken at one o’clock to sustain the jouers for the afternoon and battle for the trophies on offer!
The top 8 teams from the morning’s leagues played a ‘Swiss System’ for the 25th Fenton Quaich and the remaining 12 teams, in leagues of 4 for the 25th Anniversary Cup, Plate and Consolation trophies.
The winners were –
25th Anniversary Fenton Quaich:-
1st – Robbie and John – Fochabers.
2nd – Ed and Alison – Perth.
3rd – Gordon and Pat – Inverness. 25th Anniversary Cup:-
1st – Lynn and Shirley – Fochabers.
2nd – John & Norma – Birds&Bees
25th Anniversary Plate:
1st – Stuart and Bill – Ayr/ (Troon/Tweed Valley)
25th Anniversary Consolation

After the prize presentation the 25th Birthday Cake was ceremoniously cut and shared out along with a small libation to mark the occasion!
The weather stayed fine and thanks not only to John and Derek for preparing the piste, Ed and Alison who devised and ran the competition and Ann for organizing the lunch but to all the players who attended and made Perth Petanque’s 25th Season Birthday bash a success and happy occasion.
Our next competition is the Frank Malcolm Melee on 30th August and we look forward to hosting the SPA Masters on the 12th and 13th of September.
Perth PC advise us that this competition is now fully subscribed. No more registrations will be accepted due to all playing space being full – i.e. don’t turn up expecting to play if you haven’t already registered!

With a great deal of sadness, we report the passing of Robin Gardiner yesterday. Robin’s dedication to Troon Petanque Club was considerable and he made a lasting contribution as former President and twenty years service on the committee. He was a regular player both at his home club and on the Scottish scene and represented Scotland at international level on several occasions.
Robin was a larger than life character, always at the heart of the banter and his loss will be sorely felt by many. Our thoughts and sympathies go to Annie, the rest of the family and all of his friends at Troon PC.
Despite a dull morning in Perth an impressive 16 pairs, from a number of clubs across Scotland, arrived to take part in this event and made up a good mix of ‘the regulars’, ‘rare visitors’ and new faces to the Scottish club competition scene. A random draw allocated a number for each team which then determined who they would play in each of the 5 rounds. At the end of a sunnier afternoon two teams were on 5 wins, but it was Shirley Legge & Lynn Jenkins (Fochabers) who claimed victory, based on points difference, over fellow club members John Wilson & Robbie Stronach. 3rd place was shared between Jean & Henry Hutcheson and Margaret Mauchline & Mabel Danraj (all Perth petanque) who tied for best points difference out of the teams on 4 wins. Mabel sends her thanks to all who supported the event and those who helped out and we hope to see another excellent mix of players at the next Perth Petanque open pairs on 20th July.
10 teams registered for Penicuik’s annual Open Pairs and were divided into two pools of 4 and 6, with 3 rounds played in the morning to decide the 4 teams who would qualify for the afternoon’s main competition.
The afternoon’s main competition, a 4 team round robin, saw Jimmy & Istvan (Troon), Paul & Kevin (Troon), Mags & Monty (Inverleith) and Christine & Doug (Inverleith/Perth) battle it out. In the end Kevin and Paul prevailed to take the trophy with Mags & Monty runners up. Ron & Stephane (Penicuik) won the plate.
Many thanks to all who came to support our wee competition.
