Club Invitation to Host 2014 Events

Standard

It is that time of year again when we’d like to hear from clubs interested in hosting 2014 SPA competitions. The draft calendar has been added to the Calendar on this site (click here).  All dates and venues are TBC.

To host an SPA event a club would require 8 pistes. We’d also like the host clubs to have someone available to help with registration etc..

Could interested clubs let me know the SPA events they’d like to be considered for and also the dates of club competitions they’d like included.

We’d appreciate it if you could feed information through as soon as you can.

We hope to have a reasonably complete calendar in place by our next NEC meeting, 26.01.14.

Can you also keep us updated with any changes that may be necessary to your club details as seen on the website?

Kind regards ….Lynn

Frank Malcolm Memorial Melee 2013 Report

Standard

On a slightly overcast but pleasantly warm and dry day 18 players (well actually 19 as Istvan shared a place with Monika) took part in this Perth Petanque event – a five round individual Melee with players mixed up in each round and playing in either a pair or a triple depending on the draw.

It was especially good to see some of the newer Perth members amongst the usual mix of players, all of whom acquitted themselves well with some good wins which will hopefully encourage them to participate in future events.

The end result was very close with final results depending on the outcome of the last game and with four players on four wins fighting it out for 2nd to 4th it was Bob Boyle (Stirling) who just missed out on a prize on points difference. Alison Swiffin and Istvan/Monika tied on 4 wins and +19 points for 2nd/3rd place and by mutual agreement shared those prizes, giving the choice of prize to Istvan’s daughter who was asked if she would prefer wine or chocolate – no prizes for guessing which one she chose!

However that was a tie for Second place and the outright Winner was one of Perth’s well established players with a clean sweep of 5 wins out of 5 – Eileen Moonie, who was on top form during the event pulling out some of the classic shots that Eileen is renowned for.
Proceeds from refreshments and the fun lunchtime competitions (Congratulations to Henry Hutcheson who won both the shooting and pointing events) totalled £75. This will be donated to Cancer Research UK via their charity shop in Frank’s home town of Blairgowrie.

Many thanks to all those who assisted and participated to make this a very successful event.

Fenton Quaich Pairs Result

Standard

12 Teams from across Scotland competed for the Fenton Quaich in Perth on 16th June and it was nice to see a good mix of players taking part.  An enjoyable day was had by all and after 5 rounds 5 teams had 4 wins so the top places were decided on points difference: Winners Bob and Zandra Boyle (Birds and Bees), Runners up – last years winners – Lynn Jenkins and Shirley Legge (Fochabers).

Penicuik Open Triples Result

Standard

Penicuik hosted their latest open, this time a triples, at their new piste in Penicuik Park on Sunday 9th June.  With only 5 triples teams registered the decision was made to split up the 2 Penicuik triples teams into 3 pairs to create a round robin of 6 teams.

3 games were completed before before lunch and most of the players went over to the Craigiebield Hotel for soup and sandwiches. At lunch Stephane and Martyn were the clear leaders having won all their games in the morning. And nothing much changed in the afternoon, they won all their games in the round robin. The Montys placed second after the round robin, Moray and Keith were 3rd and Bob and John were 4th.

So on to the final and 3rd/4th playoff. John & Bob reversed their morning result to win and secure 3rd place against Moray and Keith. And similarly the final also showed a reversal of fortune with the Montys coming out on top against Stephane and Martyn.

Winners: Mags, Emma & Colin Montgomery (Inverleith)

Runners Up: Stephane Maurage & Martyn Lovatt (Penicuik)

3rd: Bob Macdonald & John McAllister (Penicuik)

4th: Moray & Keith McHattie (Penicuik)

Youth Taster Sessions in Penicuik

Standard

Coaches from Penicuik Petanque Club (with help from Colin and Emma Montgomery) ran taster sessions for 220 pupils from Penicuik High School and Beeslack Community High School on 29th and 30th May.  The hope is that a few of those pupils will be keen to learn more and so Penicuik PC are offering youth only coaching sessions on Wednesday nights throughout June and into the summer holidays.

If any other clubs are interested in engaging with their local schools please contact Colin Stewart on colinstewart1976@gmail.com who would be happy to provide advice.

Champignons – Colin, Emma & Mags Montgomery, John Watson – Grand Prix 2 Winners

Fourteen teams fought for Grand Prix 2 at Troon Petanque Club on Sunday 26th May.  Once again the weather defied the forecast and it was warm and sunny for most of the day.    Troon PC pulled out all the stops, making the competitors feel very welcome with bunting, balloons and a feast of lasagne, baked potatoes and home baking.  The SPA would like to thank Troon PC for all their hard work.

For the second year running at Troon the Champignons (The Monty Clan plus John Watson) dominated the day and secured the trophy with 5 wins.  They must like Troon’s piste!
