William Leishman Memorial

Standard

The William Leishman Memorial Trophy was held by the Ayr Petanque Club.

Twenty one players, twenty two if you include Adrian F who acted as host and umpire – eight from Ayr, eight from Troon, five from Perth and Twecher John from the B&B‘s – turned up, albeit on a dampish morning to compete for the WLM Trophy on APC’s piste at the Scottish Bowling Centre in Ayr.
What a splendid turnout compared to recent attendances at Club opens!

Seven triples teams were formed using Adrian’s now traditional ’card trick’ method each team playing a four games. The team of Enid G (Ayr), David Croft-Smith (Troon) and Istvan P (Troon) were too good for the rest of the field and with 4W +35 were worthy winners of the WLM Trophy.
T
he other teams were –
Malcolm McK, (Troon), Ray McI (Ayr), Paul W (Troon) – 3W +30.
John W (B&B‘s), Jean H and Alice S (both Perth) – 3W +6.
Monika T (Troon), Mary McG (Ayr) and Douglas H (Perth) – 2W +5.
Raymond K (Ayr), Mabel D and Henry H (both Perth) – 2W +2.
Kevin W (Troon), Philomena D Ayr), Stuart K (Ayr) – 0W -31.
Lena Croft-Smith (Troon), Jimmy W (Troon), Wilma W (Ayr) – 0W -31

With twenty one participants and the help of APC’s most generous raffle the sum of £189:00 was raised for William Leishman’s designated Charity.

Thanks to Adrian and APC‘s members for an enjoyable day and we all arrived home well in time for fish and chips for tea – well the Perth lot did!

Finlay Morrison Memorial

Standard

The Finlay Morrison Memorial Pairs was held at the North Inch in Perth.

Perth‘s second day of summer – warm, sunny and wall to wall blue sky only 11 players – 8 from Perth, 2 from the Birds and Bees and 1 from Ayr – strolled their way to the North Inch clubhouse for croissants and coffee. Failing to rouse another player Adrian made up a triple with Mabel and Margaret.

So the 5 teams played 4 games each resulting in Douglas H winning the Trophy for the second year running – last year with Stuart M this year with Ed S.

The teams were Ed S and Douglas H – 4 wins; Christine and Twecher John – 3 wins; Eileen M and Alice S, Jean and Henry H and Mabel D, Margaret M and Adrian F- 1 win each.

Regardless of the fine weather yet again a disappointing turn out for a Club Competition open to all comers – where have all the players gone?

SPA Grand Prix 3 2011

Standard

SPA Grand Prix 3 was hosted by Inverness Petanque Club on their piste at Fair Ways in Inverness on the 5th of June.

Thirteen of the fifteen teams that played in GP2 (Triaxle and Firing Black were missing) turned up on a pleasant, sunny and bright morning for the third and final Grand Prix of 2011 with the 3 Bears and Maboules 11 points ahead of their nearest rivals.

With 13 teams 4 leagues – 3 of three teams and 1 of four – was the morning format with the top 1 from each league and the next best 4 playing a modified knockout of 3 rounds, to determine the GP3 and GP Series winner. The remaining 5 teams played a round robin, meaning 5 rounds so games were restricted to 7 points.

First round in the knockout produced tight, close games – Pretty Vacant edged out Champignons 13-12, Migetirs beat Acorns 13-9, Maboules overcame Capercallie 13-6 and with the 3 Bears 11-6 up against Deuchars IPA it looked very much on the cards that there would be a ‘shoot out’ in round 2 between the Bears and Maboules for the GP Series title but it was not to be – IPA rallied and won 13-11 to meet Maboules for a place in the final.

Maboules – Grand Prix Series 2011 Winners

This also meant that Maboules, even if they were 4th, would accumulate enough points to win the SPA 2011 GP Series, however in a game of numerous ‘burnt coches’ Maboules won 13-9 to meet GP1 winners Migetirs, winners over Pretty Vacant by 13-10.

The final was a ding dong affair, the lead changing hands several times, until John C rolled in his two boules for a 13-11 to win GP3.

Nord Ecosse won their four games in the afternoon to claim the Plate.

Thanks to John W, Brian W and Douglas H for organising the competition, Derek A for doing the honours at the presentation and to Inverness Petanque Club members and Fair Ways for their hospitality.

SPA Grand Prix 2 2011

Standard

SPA Grand Prix 2 was hosted by Perth Petanque on their piste at the North Inch in Perth on the 15th of May.

The fourteen teams that played in GP1, joined by another team Firing Black from Inverleith, duly turned up on a grey but not unpleasant morning.

The revised format introduced this year – leagues in the morning – 4 leagues – with the top 2 from each league playing a modified knockout of 3 rounds, to determine the GP2 winner and the top eight places, in the afternoon. The remaining seven teams also played a knockout of 3 rounds for the Plate and GP points. see Web Site for “Competition Rules and IQS Series 2011”

First round in the knockout produced convincing wins in all four games – The Bears 13-7 v Nord Ecosse, Triaxle 13-6 v Just Us, Maboule 13-5 v Champignons (revenge for 13-1 drubbing in the morning!) and Acorns 13-6 v Sex Pisteols. The Bears went on to beat Triaxle 13-9 to reach the final to meet Maboules, 13-8 winners over Acorns .

The final was a close affair but with The Bears in the lead at 11-8 Maboules conjured up a 5 to win the game and GP2

Pretty Vacant won their three games in the afternoon to claim the Plate.

Thanks to John W and Douglas H for organising the competition, Umpire Byron M for keeping an eye on the proceedings and to Perth Petanque members for their hospitality and bacon rolls.

Birds & Bees May Day Pairs

Standard

A May Day Pairs competition was hosted by the Birds and Bees Petanque Club at the Birds and Bees in Causewayhead, Stirling.

By 9:45 on a late spring Sunday morning that couldn’t make up its mind whether to rain or shine, so it did both, but luckily the latter outshone (get it!) the former to the relief of the motley crew assembled in the Birds and Bees car park. Why do we never learn? The gate to the courtyard is locked on a Sunday morn until any time between 10:00 and 10:15!

14 players, 7 teams, 4 pistes – no need for Bob to play his fiddle – so two leagues – one of 3 and one of 4 and the morning’s play commenced.

Alison Swiffin & Ed Strachan – Birds & Beeds May Day Pairs Winners

The teams were – Zandra B & Pauline, Bob B & Stuart, Jimmy W & Carol, Margaret W & Nick, Paul B & Judy‘s grandson Thibault (pronounced Tibo), Judy C & Douglas H and Ed S & Alison S.
Note – Stuart, Carol and Nick are new members of the Birds and Bees

After an excellent lunch of soup and sandwiches the top 4 teams from the morning leagues played for the honour of being ‘top team’ of the day.

The remaining 3 teams fought it out for the non existent plate via Bob playing his fiddle!

The above resulted in Ed & Alison coming from behind to beat Judy & Douglas 13-10 to be the “May Day“ pair, with Jimmy & Carol coming third.

Bob & Stuart won the ’Plate’.

Another sociable open competition, regardless of the lack of numbers, was as usual with B & B competitions run immaculately by Bob and enjoyed by all.

Perth Pétanque – Fenton Quaich

Standard

The second Club Open Competition of the 2011 Season was the FENTON QUAICH run by the Perth Petanque Club at the North Inch in Perth.

On a most pleasant spring day only six teams turned up (ten teams last year) – five from Perth and one from Fochabers – Inverleith where were you? mind you it was Easter Sunday after all and perhaps the Capital players were at their devotions.

Robbie Stronach & John Wilson – Fenton Quaich Winners

Six teams so a league of six – doh – what other format! The teams were –

The Campers – Jean & Henry H, FASCH – Robbie S & John Wilson, Ham and Edds – Douglas H & Ed S, Kandu – Eileen M & Pat M, UZ – Alison S & John Watson and Wee Twa – Mabel D & Finlay R.

Opening round – Wee Twa fannied UZ , second round – Wee Twa were fannied by Ham and Edds – “Well that’s our points difference back to zero!” commented Mabel. For the second year running the “fannied” were excused the embarrassment of kissing the Fanny due, yet again, to the forgetfulness of the organiser.

FASCH sailed through the day undefeated although they did find themselves under the cosh against UZ at 11-2 down but pulled out the stops, or did John Watson run out of banter, to win 13-11.

So the result was as follows –

1st – FASCH – Robbie S & John Wilson – 5 wins + 38

2nd – Ham and Edds – Douglas H & Ed S – 4 wins + 22

3rd – Wee Twa – Mabel D & Finlay R – 3 wins + 8

Thanks to all for coming to support Perth Petanque and making it a good day of petanque regardless of the low turnout.

Next weekend the SPA and Troon Petanque Club host the Home Nations and we extend a welcome our Irish and Welsh visitors and both Scottish teams and look forward to a ‘home’ victory!

SPA Grand Prix 1 2011

Standard

SPA Grand Prix 1 was hosted by Troon Petanque Club on their piste at Marr Rugby Club on the 19th of April. Troon, the venue for the Home Nations in two weeks time, was chosen for GP1 to give teams already qualified for the CC the chance to reaquaint themselves with the piste – and easy it is not!

Players from Inverness, Fochabers, Perth, Stirling, Inverleith and Troon registered fourteen teams to play in GP1 – note an even number – and bodes well for GP‘s 2 and 3.

A revised format has been introduced this year – leagues in the morning with the best eight teams playing a modified knockout of 3 rounds to determine the winner and the top eight places and, in this case, the remaining six teams in a six team league – three games – playing off for the Plate – see Web Site for “Competition Rules and IQS Series 2011”

Afternoon play in the ’knockout’ produced some tight games. The Bears experienced two 13-12 games, against Acorns and Maboules, only to loose out to the Migetiers – winners against Deuchars IPA and Pretty Vacant – for the shiny new GP1 Trophy. Maboule also endured two 13-12 games before squeezing past Pretty Vacant to take third place.

The Champignons won their three games in the afternoon to claim the Plate.

Thanks to John W for organising the competition, Umpire Byron M for keeping an eagle eye on the proceedings and to Troon Petanque Club members for their hospitality and sustenance.

SPA North v South 2011

Standard

The first SPA Competition of the 2011 Season is the NORTH v the SOUTH hosted by Perth Petanque Club at the North Inch in Perth.

“ANOTHER CLOSE AFFAIR”

Here we are again – the start of another Petanque season and on an early spring day of sunshine, cloud and the odd shower the SPA were hoping for a repeat of last years turnout of 55 players. We were not too disappointed, 44 happy bunnies emerged from winter hibernation – 15 from Inverness, 6 from Fochabers, 12 from Perth, 3 from Inverleith, 2 from the Bees, and 6 from Troon. An encouraging turnout.

Play commenced at 11:00, 6 triples and 2 pairs teams per side playing five rounds. Lunch was taken after two rounds with the match tied at 8 games all.

After lunch North powered away and after 4 rounds was leading by 20 games to 12.

South made a spirited comeback in round 5, winning 6 games but North held on taking the 2 games they required for victory.

So the end result was – NORTH 22 – SOUTH 18

Thanks to Fraser S, Stuart T, Christine T, Calum T, Pat S, Gordon S, Moira P, Bob P, Duncan F, Jim McC, Christine S, Jim S, Margaret S, Marcus G and Harvey M from Inverness, Gavin, Alex, Robbie, John, Shirley and Richard from Fochabers and Paul B from the Bees who represented the North and Jean, Stuart, Ian, Eileen, Mabel, Margaret, Henry, John T, Alice, Ed, Alison and Douglas, from Perth, Christine, Mari, and Art from Inverleith, John W from the Bees and Brian, Istvan, Malcolm, Donnie, Paul and Kevin from Troon who represented the South.

Inverleith Cash Pairs

Standard

The final competition of the 2010 season was the Inverleith Cash Pairs hosted by Inverleith Petanque Club at Inverleith Park in Edinburgh on 3rd October.

October – the month of mists and mellow fruitfulness, or is that November? Whatever, it was mist and raining cats and dogs as players assembled for bacon butties and coffee in the clubhouse. And you have guessed it – an odd number of teams yet again! – 13 on this occasion. So three leagues of 3 and one of 4 for the morning’s play, the top 8 for the Main and the ‘big prizes’ and the remaining 5 for the Plate, with a small consideration for the winners, in the afternoon.

The 13 teams were – Mags & Montie, Alan & John P, Emma & Derek, Christine & Art,

Colin S & Benny, John W & Chantal, Stephane & Istvan (Troon) and Mari & Douglas (Perth) from Inverleith, Shirley & Lynn and Robbie & John from Fochabers and Jean & Henry, Eileen & Alice and Mabel & Finlay from Perth.

Fortunately the weather improved, and continued to be fine all day, by the time play started and with no ‘leagues of death’ most of the usual suspects qualified for the Main. After two rounds of the MRK (Modified Rolling Knockout – you were told about it in the last report) The Foreigners (Stephane & Istvan) overcame Pocket Jacks (Colin & Benny) and fannied The Old Farts (sorry Alan & John P!) to meet Fasch (Robbie & John), winners against Just Us (Alice & Eileen) and Meikleour (Shirley & Lynn) for the big prize of £130:00!

Both teams were firing on all cylinders however The Foreigners edged ahead an held on despite Fasch’s efforts to catch up. At 11-9 with John’s last boule of the end holding shot Istvan tiered and stayed for 2 and a 13-9 victory.

Emma & Derek came out top of the 5 team league to win the Plate.

Inverleith Cash Pairs –

1st The Foreigners – Stephane & Istvan £130:00

2nd Fasch – Robbie & John £60:00

3rd Champignons – Mags & Montie £30:00

Cash Pairs Plate –

1st Emma & Derek £15:00

Thanks to Inverleith PC for their generous prizes and hospitality, top class as usual, and to Colin S for running a smooth competition.

“That’s all folks!” – for 2010.

Douglas.
