It is with deep sadness and regret that I have to announce that former SPA President Byron Milton passed away on Wednesday 27th March.
In a playing career which spanned well over three decades Byron achieved countless titles in Scotland and further afield, a regular place in the Scotland squad and was one of the most successful players in Scottish petanque’s history. One of petanque’s most memorable characters, he will be sorely missed by all.
On behalf of the SPA I would like to pass on our deepest sympathy to his wife Sandra and all his club mates and friends at the Birds & Bees.
Colin Stewart, President

We have received more details from the hosts of the first round of the Grand Slam. Interested players should visit the Grand Slam Website (http://makingchanges.wix.com/grandslam):
I can see from the SPA website that you have a link to the Grand Slam of Petanque series. Could you please promote on the site the first event which is being held in North Yorkshire just north of Ripon on Sunday 5th May. I am aware that this unfortunately clashes with the Celtic Challenge, but I imagine there may well be other teams north of the border that might like to travel for this, particularly given its location (at a theme park and on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales) and given that it’s a bank holiday weekend.
I am really keen to promote the sport more in the North of England and am delighted that my club has been awarded this inaugural competition. Unfortunately I had little choice over dates this year – but hopefully this will become an annual event, and a date in 2014 can be selected in close liaison with your calendar.
For each Grand Slam event, which can be entered as a stand-alone or as part of the series, after the morning leagues teams will qualify for a gold, silver or bronze knock-out, with first round losers of the gold and silver then moving into the next competition down, thereby giving a minimum of 5 games I understand. The intention is to have cash prizes for top 4 of each tournament, with £300 minimum as the top prize for the Gold event (numbers permitting). Registration is to go live very soon with a dedicated website – when available, would you promote it please.
I am happy to provide further information to members as required. thank you.
We have received an email from Michel Morel in Jersey giving details of the Carrefour Open Triples and Jersey Opens to be held over the May Bank Holiday weekend. Players who are interested should contact Michel or visit the website links in his email:
I am writing from the Carrefour Petanque Club in Jersey to advise about some open competitions being held in Jersey over the first Bank Holiday weekend in May.
We are having our Open Triples on the Monday 6th May, following the Jersey Petanque Club’s Open on Saturday 4th and Sunday 6th. They have substantially increased the prize money this year.
I think this may be of interest as Easyjet have started some direct flights leaving Glasgow early on the Saturday morning and returning on the Tuesday. I have used the service myself and have found it excellent value.
Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you require any further information.
